Area Info
Winter in Skopelos and Alonissos
Winters on Skopelos and Alonissos can be cold, wet and windy, hence the lush, greenness of the islands. However, this is more than compensated by the beautiful, sunny days which we also experience, especially in November and January.

Winter is a time when the island community once more comes together when tourists have left the island; when the pace of life slows down once more and people have time to sit and chat over coffee in one of the many café bars open along the paralia (waterfront) during the day and enjoy a drink or meal in one of the bars or tavernas in the evening.

"Ochi" (No) Day is celebrated on 28th October. On October 28, 1940, Greece entered World War II on the Allied side. This day gets its name from saying ochi (no) to the ultimatum of the Italian invaders.
In November, the olives start to be gathered in and taken to the olive oil factory for processing. Christmas is celebrated more now in Greece, followed by carnival time in February and the big Easter celebration, usually held in April.

The majority of supermarkets, bakeries, butchers and greengrocers remain open throughout the winter, as does the “DIY” store on the ring road, the news agency and the hardware store. The Health Centre and pharmacies are, of course, open throughout the year. Taxis and buses are available from the area near the port, although the bus service is limited in winter.

Travel between the islands and the mainland is by ferry and hydrofoil as there are no charter flights into Skiathos between the middle of October and the beginning of May. There are, however, regularely internal flights between Athens and Skiathos.
